Tradition
Founded in 1906 and staffed continuously by sisters of Mercy and dedicated lay faculty, Sacred Heart School has built a tradition of excellence in Catholic education within the community of Oelwein. It offers moral development, quality education, social awareness and extra-curricular activities in a Christian atmosphere utilizing academically current methods and materials. Spiritual Development Sacred Heart School promotes the development of the whole student in a Christ-centered atmosphere. Sacred Heart assists the family and the parish in promoting spiritual and personal formation of its young people. Spiritual Formation
Parent Involvement Sacred Heart School recognizes parents as the primary educators of their children. Sacred Heart encourages parental involvement and support. Parents' ideas and suggests are ALWAYS welcome. Parents may come to school during the day to see their children, enjoy lunch with them, and to volunteer their services. Sacred Heart has a very active parent volunteer program that allows parents to be involved in their children's education while keeping costs down. Parent-Studnet-Teacher conferences are held twice yearly. Parents are encouraged to schedule extra conferences or call when they have questions. |
Value Centered Teaching
Christian Values are taught in all subjects. Morality and sex education are included in daily religion class. Courtesy, respect and responsibility are stressed with the students. Each student is valued. The special talents of each student are recognized and developed. Quality Instruction Sacred Heart is fully accredited by the Iowa Department of Education. The faculty consists of experienced, certified teachers. Sacred Heart offers instruction which provides continuous progress where students learn at their own rate in a well-rounded curriculum. Features include student goal setting, hands-on activities, student portfolios, modern library with weekly instruction, computer instruction in a computer lab and on computers in each classroom, talented and gifted program, Rainbows program, physical education and music, Leadership Club, Spanish offered in the Challenge program, Walking for Fitness trail, Presidential Physical Fitness program, annual talent show, Title I Reading, AEA services, buddy activities, student tutors, and weekly guidance class with Christian values. Other features include participation with the Oelwein Community Schools in intramural sports, band, and instrumental music lessons, latch key services, state licensed preschool for three, four, and five year olds, hot lunch program with meals prepared on site, and school bus transportation. |
